TPO is one of the many single-ply roofing membranes used in flat roofs. It’s a curious material as it falls in the same price range as its contemporaries, EPDM and PVC, but actually surpasses both of them in terms of durability and longevity.
In this post, Roofer Chicks® discusses why TPO is the practical choice for flat roofs.
TPO Roofs
TPO or thermoplastic polyolefin membrane is a single-ply roof that was first introduced in the early 1990s. It was manufactured as the affordable alternative to PVC roofs which, at the time, were the standard for commercial properties.
This membrane is made up of three distinct layers: the TPO polymer base, the polyester-reinforced scrim and the thermoplastic polyolefin top ply. Like its contemporaries, TPO uses common fillers such as talc and fiberglass in its composition.
Durable Membrane
TPO boasts higher natural durability when compared with similar thermoplastic membranes. It’s especially resilient against mold growth, dirt accumulation and punctures. A properly installed TPO roof only requires a couple of preventive roof repairs in its lifetime and is a generally low-maintenance material.
TPO also comes in reinforced variants made to handle a building’s natural thermal expansion and contraction. The membrane is flexible enough that it doesn’t form cracks, allowing it to handle a building’s settling or moving.
Affordable Roofing
TPO is priced reasonably, making it more affordable than PVC and EPDM. This is due to its higher weather tolerance and durability. It’s also more energy-efficient than both systems.
Easy to Install
This single-ply membrane is made in wide sheets. With its natural lightness, it’s one of the easiest membrane systems to install since it involves fewer seams. That said, it’s still better to have an experienced roofer install this it to take full advantage of its benefits.
