Believe it or not, your roof has many ways of talking to you. If you find that your gutters are always clogged, overflowing could be the least of your worries. Depending on what is actually causing the clogs, it could mean a simple gutter cleaning or getting a roof replacement job. Here’s why you should pay attention.
Granules in Your Gutters
When roof manufacturers produce asphalt shingles, mineral granules are embedded into the outer surface. These granules are what create the color of the shingles but, more importantly, they protect your shingles from harmful UV rays from the sun. They also make your roof more durable and fire-resistant. Simply put, this is what gives your asphalt shingles longevity.
With proper granule coverage, your roof can withstand the constant beating that the elements give it year after year. However, over time, your roofing shingles lose these protective granules. They get washed away by the rain and most of them end up in your gutters.
When To Have Your Roof Replaced
If you have a newly installed roof, it is normal for you to find some granules in your gutters. Don’t worry. This is just your asphalt shingles adjusting to their new life as a roof. Packing, shipping, and installation will loosen some of the granules and they end up in the downspouts and gutters. This is known as shedding.
But if you are seeing a large number of granules in your gutters and your roof is approaching its 15th birthday then, unfortunately, this is a sure sign that your roof is nearing the end of its lifespan. If this is the case, you should consider having it replaced.
