Roof blisters typically occur when the roof loses its adhesion. They usually result in raised areas that look like bubbles on the roof’s surface. These bubbles can later on be filled with air or water and grow larger in size, especially when they are left untreated.
In this post, residential roofing expert Roofer Chicks® shares some prevention and repair tips for roof blisters.
Prevention
You can prevent blisters from appearing on your flat roof by making sure the materials are properly installed, keeping the materials dry and inspecting the roof on a regular basis. Moreover, when installing your roof, it is best to do so when the weather is dry. But if it suddenly rains, ensure that your roofer waits for the bad weather to pass and the roof to dry completely.
Correct installation is also important to create a firm contact between the materials and ensure proper adhesion. Lastly, don’t forget to have your roofing inspected so as to prevent extensive damage or issues in the substrate.
Repair
If your roof has small blisters with eroded bare spots, you can treat them using a cold-process asphalt coating and gravel. However, if a blister has already grown to around two feet, it’s best to have the area marked and monitored if it’s getting larger as time goes by. If the blister grows to about five feet or affects a high-traffic area, make sure to have it repaired ASAP.
